DANISH SOCIOLOGISTS' CONGRESS - CALL FOR PANELS

In connection with Dansk Sociologkongres (Danish sociologists' congress) 2012, CESAU and Dansk Sociologforening (Danish association of sociologists) invite everyone interested to suggest panels. The goal of the workshop sessions is to give participants an opportunity to promote and gain insight into the latest sociological research. The topic of the individual workshops may relate to the overall theme of the conference, Troubled Identities, or they may deal with other sociological topics, select sociological theorists, or sociological methods. In order to integrate keynotes and international participants, it is our hope that several workshops may be held in English. Suggestions for panels must include a title, a short presentation of the topic, suggestions for possible workshop leaders, and a specification of the language of the workshop.

Workshop leaders are responsible for composing a call for papers and making sure that the workshop takes place as scheduled. A panel typically takes an hour and a half and includes three or four papers. CESAU will be of assistance concerning the practical organisation of the individual workshops, such as handling registrations and distributing papers. Discussion papers and ideas for workshops should be sent to (ks@cesau.au.dk) before September 1, 2011.

LUHMANN CONFERENCE 2011: LUHMANN AND THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM

Luhmann and the healthcare system has not previously been a conference theme. This will be remedied in this year's Luhmann seminar, taking place on December 9. The theme has been chosen because this particular area constantly gives rise to societal communication, and because Luhmann's theory provides strong concepts through which to observe this communication. Systematically, the function is fulfilled in pathological treatment based on orientation towards the code sick/healthy. This distinction structures the field of communication between the patient and the healthcare staff in general. The function of pathological treatment cannot be fulfilled elsewhere in society – neither power nor money can heal. However, the healthcare system is subject to critique from many sides in society: In the media, critical information is delivered from other functional systems in society, such as the economic one – the demand for cost reduction. From the functional system of law – the demand for openness concerning errors of judgment. Or from that of science – lack of backing for initiatives in the medical system etc.

PH.D. COURSE: SOCIOLOGICAL STRATEGIES OF ANALYSIS (10 ECTS)

In October and November, CESAU offers the Ph.D. course "sociological strategies of analysis" which will give participants an overview of classical and modern sociological approaches as well as a sharpened flair for applying these approaches in analysing current affairs. The course consists of 10 days of introductions to classical and modern sociological thinkers, guest lectures by AU researchers who make use of sociology in their work, and a Ph.D. workshop with project presentations from participants.

PH.D. COURSE IN NVIVO (1 ECTS)

In November, CESAU offers a two day course in NVivo – a computer program designed to systematise qualitative surveys. The course focuses on the parts of NVivo which are particularly relevant for the participants' use of the program in their own research. Participants will get to use the program hands-on, and the instructors will discuss and exemplify how the program may be applied in the individual research projects.

PH.D. COURSE: PROFESSIONAL STUDIES IN A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE – AN INTRODUCTION (5 ECTS)

The purpose of this Ph.D. course is to give an introduction to various sociological perspectives on the study of professions. The aim is one of analytical strategy – different approaches to and central concepts in the study of professions are introduced, it is comparative, i.e. it focuses on differences and similarities among various professions, and, finally, it is problem oriented, i.e. special attention is paid to current empirical issues and challenges of research. Methodically, the course will alternate between lectures, group assigments, and presentations from students. The course makes up 5 ECTS points.

CESAU FORMS PH.D. GROUP

A group of Ph.D. students have just formed a process group for Ph.D. students at AU, in order thereby to create a forum in which to meet with other Ph.D. students. The Ph.D. process stretches over three or four years, which means that a newly employed Ph.D. student is embarking on a long process filled with rollercoaster rides up and down. The purpose of the group is to create a place where Ph.D. students may support each other in the Ph.D. process. The group is open for all Ph.D. students at AU who have a sociological approach to their projects. Meetings are held twice a month, and dates are announced on the CESAU website.

  • Sign up here, if you also need a process forum.

Once you have registered, you will automatically make the mailing list which will, among other things, inform you about the dates of meetings. For further information, contact Josefine Dalum Hansen, joda@dpu.dk

NEWS FROM CESAU'S STUDENT GROUP: NEW SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY CIRCLE TO START IN AUTUMN 2011

The student group have been busy composing a syllabus and finding guest lecturers for a new sociological study circle to be launched in September 2011. The study circle will center around the reading of Axel Honneth's The Struggle for Recognition. In the introduction to the book, sociologist Rasmus Willig writes the following:

"Honneth's theory of recognition is (...) not limited to a perspective of identity theory. It includes a larger theory about the basic dynamic conflicts that propel the development of society and set the terms for its integrated stability."

Most sessions will be 'pure' discussion sessions, whereas others will consist of an introductory presentation by a guest lecturer and subsequent discussion of the presentation and the reading for the day.

The study circle broadly targets all interested students at AU. No prior qualifications are required – the only thing required is willingness to discuss. The program for the study circle and information about registration may be found here.
