Lecture by Bradley Levinson

On May 21 at 15-17.00, Bradley Levinson, American professor of anthropology at Indiana University, will be giving the lecture "Citizenship in the Vernacular: An Anthropology of Education in/for Democracy.” In his lecture, Levinson will introduce his concepts of citizenship and democracy as well as illustrating the challenges associated with new and contradictory forms of citizenship, especially as they arise in Latin America, where state funded educational programmes such as “Education for Democracy” compete with more local forms of citizenship and identity.

Focus on Bourdieu, May 16

CESAU’s student group will be hosting the last ”Focus on a researcher” event, which will concentrate on the theories of Pierre Bourdieu and their practical application in current research. We have invited three researchers from different fields, who make use of Bourdieu’s theories in their work, and we look forward to presentations by Ida Willig (RUC), Lisanne Wilken (IKS), and Jakob Sjkøtt-Larsen (AAU). The seminar will focus on the interdisciplinary and practical possibilities of application, and it is this broadly addressed to anybody with an interest in sociology. The event will take place on May 16 at 14-17.00 and is open for everybody interested.

  • Room and further information will follow – keep an eye on the website and the student group’s Facebook page

The lecture series "Aarhus Lectures in Sociology" kicked off with lecture by Bauman

On April 16, CESAU hosted a lecture by Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. The lecture was the first in the lecture series "Aarhus Lectures in Sociology". Bauman held his lecture under the heading “Liquid Modernity Revisited”, rounding off with a call to the youth to find solutions to how we may overcome the challenges of liquid modernity.

Bauman for beginners

Prior to Bauman’s lecture, CESAU’s student group organised the event ”Bauman Warm-up, which was intented to focus on Bauman and equip the students for his lecture. Ole Morsing from History of Ideas and Mads P. Sørensen from Political Science made themselves available for the event, attempting to provide the group of roughly 40 students present with a bit more insight on Bauman:

Conversation in computer games is also research in interaction

"Today, Mark Thornberg-Pedersen presents his research and asks the rest of the group to help him with his next step. Mark is a Ph.D. student at Information Studies, University of Southern Denmark. The purpose of his Ph.D. project is to bring about understanding of how people communicate virtually while playing computer games on the internet. Mark has brought with him a brief sequence from a computer game and a conversation. The group remain silent while watching the screen, listening to the conversation, and taking down notes on a piece of paper.

The above is an exerpt from the article ”Conversation in computer games is also research in interaction”, focusing on the research group "Social Interaction Research at Aarhus University (SIRAU)", which is part of CESAU. The group does research in interaction among human beings, i.e. on how to understand and interpret a conversation taking place among two or more persons.
